Talk:Write Online CPD Course

Thank you for purchasing the Talk:Write package.

The training is designed to be flexible. It can be viewed as a whole day of INSET or as separate sessions across a number of staff meetings. It can also be watched by individuals to suit their schedules.

The training lasts 4 hours. Scheduling in breaks between videos would be necessary if watching together on one day.

It would be useful to have the Talk:Write book to hand while watching.

It is not permitted to share this training with people outside of your school or with other schools within your academy.

Introduction

A short introduction to Talk:Write and the contents of the CPD.


Session 1 – Why Talk Is an Issue

A review of the reasons why talk is an issue for children and how to create a positive culture of oracy and discussion. The video covers Chapter 1 of the Talk:Write book.


Session 2 – Launching Talk:Write

A summary of the elements of the Talk:Write programme and how to get started. The video covers Chapter 2 of the Talk:Write book.


Session 3 – The 5 Codes of Speech

Each of the five codes of speech are examined with clear advice and practical strategies to introduce them to children. Learn the importance of code switching so children can speak and write in Standard English alongside their own accents, dialects, and languages. The video covers Chapter 3 of the Talk:Write book.


Session 4 – The 5 'S' System for Spelling

A system to support pupils’ spelling of more complex words that don’t follow phonetic rules. Two examples of the system in action are included and we hope you follow along to learn a new word. The video covers Chapter 5 of the Talk:Write book.


Session 5 – The 5 Suave Features of Language

Each of the five suave features of language are described with lots of practical examples of how to teach them effectively and enjoyably. Covers Chapter 4 of the Talk:Write book.


Session 6 – The Suave Writing Session

See how the suave writing session is used as a formative and diagnostic tool to check that the Talk:Write sessions and teaching are being embedded. The children will love the electric atmosphere. Advice is included to support demotivated children and those who can’t sustain writing for longer periods. Covers Chapters 6, 7, and 8 of the Talk:Write book.


Summary

A quick wrap up of the Talk:Write programme with a reminder of the importance of talk to children and their life chances.

If a child can say it, a child can write it.
